GENERAL MEMBER’S MEETING

FEBRUARY 8, 2005

 

President Nancy Acevedo called the meeting to order at 11:00 AM and asked Bill Shephurst to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

GREETERS

Nancy introduced today’s volunteer greeters:  Carla Boch and Catherine Meyer.

 

MOMENT OF SILENCE

Nancy asked that we observe a moment of silence for former Retired Employees Association Vice President Merrill Day, who recently passed away.

 

MINUTES

Copies were not available of the January 11, 2005 meeting, they will be available and approved at the March meeting.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT

Sylvia Tatum reported on January 2005.  Balance in the Operating Fund of January 1, 2005 was $4,740.93.  Income for January was $1,262.49 and expenditures were $3,878.60 leaving a balance in the Operating Fund on January 31, 2005 of $2,124.82.  Reserve accounts totaled $10,291.51 for a grand total of $12,416.33.

 

NEW MEMBER AND FIRST TIMERS

Rose Fierra, Susan Belkner, Bernie Gipson and Sandy Raymond.

 

BIRTHDAYS

Those remembering birthdays and anniversaries gave their information.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

RETIREE ISSUES TASK FORCE – Dave Crow reported they did meet in December and discussed issues which were forwarded to the City.  He has no other information at this point; however, he thinks we possibly will hear something after the 1st of March.

 

HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE – Dave Crow said this Committee did not meet in January.  They will be looking at out of area coverage and retiree health insurance for the New Year.  Rumors that they are looking at higher co pays.  Again nothing will be heard until March.

 

ADVOCACY COMMITTEE – Joe Flynn advised the Committee met and wanted to concentrate on gathering information on all the activities that are going on with the Retirement Board and all the Committees and Sub-Committees. This information will then be brought back to the Committee.  Joe reminded the group that we do have a web

 

site and encouraged everyone to check it out.  As the newsletter is only once a month and has limited space, if something is really critical it can be put on the website and his Committee will try and activate a phone tree.

 

OTHER BUSINESS

 

RETIREMENT BOARD ELECTIONNancy said the election period ends today.  They are in the process of counting the ballots and we should know the outcome by tomorrow.  Joe Flynn thanked everyone who voted for him.

 

WEBSITE – John Tsiknas gave some short additional information on the website.

 

STATUS OF RETIREMENT FUND

Nancy reported that the Retirement Fund balance stood at $3.61 Billion, up $47 Million from last month.

 

MEMBER COMMENTS

Sharon Beach, Sunshine Committee Chair, reminded everyone to let her know if members have sickness or death.

 

Short discussion on health benefits and rumors.

 

GUEST SPEAKER

Nancy introduced City Attorney Mike Aguirre.

 

ADJOURNMENT

The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 PM.  Next meeting is March 8, 2005.
