The minutes of the General Member’s meetings of May 11, and June 8 were approved as submitted.

Sylvia reported that 30-35 newsletters came back as “undeliverable” from the latest “Return Receipt Requested” mailing and urged the membership to advise her of any changes of address.

Sylvia said the Holiday Luncheon would again be held at Tom Ham’s on December 8, 2004.  Cost is pending.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

Several members reported July birthdays (and one December.)

HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Bob West reported that the next  HAC meeting will be Friday July 16th at 8:30 AM

at the Retirement Office.

Bob reported that a widow of a POA retiree complained that she was told that there would be “no changes” in next year’s health insurance packages and she found that her Kaiser insurance costs had gone up to such an extent that she had to cancel her coverage.  Valerie VanDeweghe apologized for the misunderstanding and stated that the “Plan Designs” (benefits) had not changed

but that the costs and co-pays had increased in some plans.

STATUS OF LAWSUIT

Adam Saling reported that the settlements of the lawsuits against the Retirement Board and City Council for under funding the City Retirement System have been approved by the Court pending clearance of two titles on properties put up by the City as collateral.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE

Adam Saling reported that Don Robbins and Joe Flynn had volunteered for the nominating committee and that, pursuant to the by-laws, one additional committee member is to be elected from the general membership.  Don Robbins reported that there were three vacancies on the Board and that Bob Cain would not be running for reelection as secretary.

Suzy Davenport and Terry Flynn offered their services for the nominating committee and Suzy was elected.

RULES COMMITTEE MEETING

Virginia Silverman reminded the membership that on July 14th the City Council Rules Committee would consider the Mayor’s Pension Reform Committee’s recommendations with respect to the makeup of the Retirement Board.

Adam Saling reported that the PRC had recommended a seven-person “professional” Retirement Board and that the mayor is pushing for a board with the same uneven ratio of three active members and one retiree.  He said the Board of Directors had authorized him to make a recommendation to the Rules Committee in favor of the PRC’s recommended seven person “professional” Board with two standing advisory committees, one made up of active employees and the other of retirees.

STATUS OF RETIREMENT FUND

Adam reported that the balance of the Retirement Fund as of July 12th was $3.337 Billion, an increase over last month of $140 Million, due, in most part, to City contributions to the fund.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 AM whereupon Adam Saling introduced the day’s guest speaker, Rob Hutsel, Program Director, San Diego River Park Foundation.

Respectfully submitted,

Robert E. Cain

Secretary
