OF SAN DIEGO RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION GENERAL MEMBER’S MEETING APRIL 13, 2004 President Acevedo called the meeting to order at 11:00AM and asked distinguished veteran Forest Rustad to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. Forest was living in Alaska on December 7, 1941. When the Japanese invaded the Aleutian Islands all able bodied men on the mainland were conscripted into the “Territorial Guard.” This group, including Forest, was eventually drafted into the Army. Since he was able to ski, Forest was trained for mountain warfare but was in sunny California ready to deploy for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. MINUTES The minutes of the General Member’s meeting of March 9, 2004 were approved as submitted. TREASURER’S REPORTTreasurer Sylvia Tatum
reported a balance in the Operating Fund on March 1, 2004 of $1,993.88.
Income for March totaled $1,395.96 and expenses were $1,081.16.
Operating Fund balance on March 31, 2004 was $2,308.68. Reserve accounts totaled
$10,197.63 for a grand total in all accounts of $12,506.31. APRIL BIRTHDAYS Merrill Day – 87 Mike Barclay Sylvia Tatum – 76 Bob Headland – 71 RETIREE ISSUES TASK FORCEDave Crow said there was nothing new on benefit requests. He said Fred Pierce, president of the Retirement Board stated that, based on current stock performances, funds would be available this fall for a 13th check and all three Corbett Settlement checks due. Dave reminded the membership that three Corbett checks and a 13th check paid in one year may have income tax consequences which should be planned for in advance. HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEEThe next meeting will be April 16th. At issue will be the continuation of the Health Care Counsel at $57,000 per year. Although it is not used to a great degree, staff will recommend that the HCC be retained MEMBERSHIPDon Robbins said he
was informed that the format for pre-retirement seminars was being reformulated
and that there would be no seminars until after July 1st. SUNSHINE COMMITTEESharon Beach reported sending birthday cards to all members over 80. A get well card was sent to Jack Katz who is again in the hospital. Sympathy cards were sent to the families of Floyd Moore and Bill Davis. PENSION REFORM COMMISSIONNancy reminded all that the Pension Reform Commission meets every Tuesday and the public is welcome to testify. E-MAIL ADDRESSESJoe Flynn again requested that members forward e-mail addresses to him so he could e-mail the newsletter and inform members about the pending Association web site. STATUS OF LAWSUIT Lawsuit settlement information
has been sent to all retirees. Nancy
said Mike Conger would like to address the membership and answer questions
before the court hearing on approval of the settlement on May 7th. He is out of town today. The Board is trying
to find a site and time for a special meeting where Mike can answer
any questions the membership might have.

STATUS OF RETIREMENT FUND The Retirement Fund balance as of April 11, 2004 was $3.263 Billion, up only $2 Million from last month, but up nonetheless. OTHER BUSINESS Mike Barclay reported that his wife has Kaiser Senior Advantage, is over 65, has Medicare A and B and pays NO health insurance premiums. He recommends that people check it out with Kaiser. The meeting was adjourned at 11:30AM whereupon Adam Saling introduced guest speaker Jack Stephens. Respectfully submitted, Robert E.
