The REA plays a vital watchdog role in monitoring ongoing developments in public employee retirement provisions and advocating for the interests of its members.

For many years City retirees enjoyed a quiet and peaceful retirement, with key matters of pension payments and healthcare coverage basically running on autopilot. No More!

(To read the rest of the information on what REA does and how you can become a member - please click here.)

Monthly meetings are normally held on the second Tuesday of each month, at 11 AM January through November, in the War Memorial Building at Balboa Park.  At these meetings there is a general meeting in which association business is conducted and a program that is educational or entertaining, with subjects that are of interest to retirees.  The December luncheon meeting is more social in nature and is normally held on the second Tuesday of December.

REGARDING PSC LITIGATION

The Purchase of Service Credit (PSC) issue and resulting litigation is likely of interest to retired members whether or not you are directly impacted. We expect that SDCERS will post all public legal documents pertaining to PSC and the pending Substantially Equal lawsuit. These can currently be found on the SDCERS web site (www.sdcers.org ) under "About SDCERS" then click Litigation on the drop down menu. SDMEA's Ann Smith's complaint and recently filed lawsuit can be accessed there also. Ann's complaint appears to us to be more comprehensive in scope than the complaint filed by Mike Conger. Also, Ann Smith's complaint names both SDCERS and the City. In addition to damages from fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, the SDMEA lawsuit seeks to overturn the earlier PSC litigation. Ann is representing some three hundred named individuals in this single complaint.

What happens when you’re gone? SDCERS has recently updated their "Death Benefits for Survivors and Beneficiaries" information and posted it on their website. They no longer print a hard copy because it is difficult to keep the information up to date. So if you have one of the old booklets, We suggest you toss it and go to the website to get up to date information.

If you have a City retiree friend who does not have a computer or access to the internet via the libraries, you might print a copy for them. Another other option is for them to call SDCERS and ask for a hard copy.

A Message from Ann Smith - regarding the recent California Supreme Court's Determination about Health Benefit Costs for Orange County's Retirees. According to Ann, “The California Supreme Court’s determination reinforces the view we have previously expressed that the City of San Diego’s retirees have an ironclad, vested right to receive the retiree health benefits in effect at the time of their retirement. The City of San Diego agrees and has acknowledged this obligation.” PDF OF MESSAGE
